Cut-Off Genes

There's a gene for aversion to ambiguity
which explains my wayward brother
who told me he'd vote
for Donald Duck if he was a Republican.
What he needed early in life
was to be guided
through fuzzy dilemmas, forced
to watch Dark Shadows,
with the vampire family trying to redefine goodness,
and The Prisoner, with Patrick McGoohan
trapped in a Kafka nightmare,
instead of The Beverly Hillbillies
and Dragnet ("just the facts, ma'am").
His daughter should have ended up
a single mom trying to make
her way out of poverty, caught
off-guard one night, knocked up,
her dreams knocked sideways.
